~About Deborah Tukua
Holly Creek Books is the bonafide website of author Deborah Stafford Tukua. You may have become first acquainted with Lowell and Deborah Tukua through the pages of their former family magazine, Coming Home, which they founded in March 1995. The summer of that same year the Tukua's finally had their dream of raising their children in the country come true. They moved from the suburbs of Jacksonville, Florida to the vast rolling countryside of south Tennessee. Their homestead is located along the banks of the beautiful, unspoiled Holly Creek.
Lowell grew up in a farming community, but the learning curve was tremendous for Deborah having always lived in the suburbs of a big city. Raising milk goats, quail, rabbits, mules, chickens, turkeys and gardening were all new undertakings for her. So whenever she received a great piece of advice from her new friends, neighbors and acquaintances, she wrote it down. Everything was new and exciting, so much was recorded. After hundreds of tips, advice and recipes accumulated in a file, Deborah thought it time to type them all out and her first self published book was born, Pearls of Country Wisdom: A Homesteaders' Quick Reference Guide to Simple Living. She sent a copy of her book to Lyons Press of New York City and they called her right away, wanting to publish it. Then, they asked her to write two more to make a fine trio of self reliance, country living books. The second and third books by Deborah are: Pearls of Kitchen Wisdom and Pearls of Garden Wisdom. Deborah asked her good friend with two green thumbs, Vicki West to co-author the garden book with her. Each book in the Pearls of Wisdom series is filled with hundreds of helpful hints and ingenious ideas along with recipes and remedies, some of which have been passed down for generations among country folk. It is a great move toward preserving the wisdom of past generations and America's rural heritage.
Deborah's articles have been published in magazines, books, newsletters and newspapers including: Home School Digest, Encouraging Word, Gentle Spirit, Miserly Moms, Countryside, Country Living, Tennessee Cooperator, Small Farmer's Journal, Traditional Bowhunting, Times Daily of Florence, AL, Florida Times Union of Jacksonville, FL, Homefires Hearth, Busy Moms Recipes, and Farmers Almanac. Many of Deborah's time honored gardening tips were used in FATV's documentary: American Almanac: A Living History. She's written numerous articles for FATV's website, www.farmersalmanactv.com.
Deborah also gives lost arts demonstrations through out the year at historical events and museums such as Children's Museum of the Shoals, in Florence, AL, Pope's Museum in Florence, AL and Tennessee Agricultural Museum in Nashville, TN. At these annual events she not only signs her books, but shows how to make quill pens from wild turkey feathers, giving interesting information about the time in which quill pens were used daily and allows the attendants to try writing with a quill pen.
